What is EPS?

EPS is an abbreviation of Expanded Polystyrene. In daily speech, the material is called cellular plastic. The raw material for EPS is small polystyrene beads that have absorbed 4-7% pentane gas. During heating, the material expands (ferments) up to 50 times the original volume.
 

Pentane is a volatile hydrocarbon compound (C5H12). Most of the pentane gas is released in the production of EPS and replaced with air. The released pentane gas does not affect the ozone layer. EPS has never used CFCs or HCFCs (so-called freons) neither in the production of the raw material nor in the manufacture of the final product.
 

EPS is made from crude oil which is considered a non-renewable natural resource. Of the oil consumed in the West, 86% is used for energy production, heating or as a fuel. In Europe, total production of all plastics accounts for 4% of oil consumption and EPS for 0.2%.

 

 

 

EPSCEMENT AB LEADS DEVELOPMENTS
We manufacture EPS ourselves for quality assurance of the material. We are expanding recycled polystyrene particles of a certain size (according to an optimal viewing curve) that have been absorbed by pentane gas. When these particles are heated in saturated water vapor, the pentan gas is released and replaced with air. In the case of new production of EPS, the particles have a smooth surface with closed cells, which results in minimal water absorption. We therefore always have control over the compressive strength and dehydration in ready-made EPSCement®.
